Life in Split lately

Since November, we have organized several creative workshops, as well as culinary workshops, at the Golden Age Center.

Each workshop is filled with wonderful energy. Participants are always happy to be there—creating art, sharing moments together, and, of course, enjoying some good food 😊. The atmosphere is consistently positive and inspiring.

One thing that truly stood out to me is that everyone who takes part in the workshops is an artist in their own way. Each person has a unique style and personal perspective on art. This is what makes the experience so special—art is not something fixed or concrete; it is shaped by life experiences, thoughts, and individual ways of seeing the world. Observing how each participant expresses themselves through art is incredibly inspiring.

During one workshop focused on canvas painting, I was genuinely impressed by the results. The paintings were so beautiful that it felt as if I were surrounded by professional artists.

We also organized a workshop dedicated to making Christmas ornaments. This project was particularly meaningful, as it was carried out in collaboration with another association. Using the decoupage technique, we decorated Christmas balls and let them dry before putting them up for sale. These ornaments held special value, as the funds raised were donated to the MOST association to support people experiencing homelessness.

To further support this cause, we also prepared gingerbread and delicious sugar-coated almonds, which we sold along the Riva. Around 80 other associations participated in this event, creating a lively and festive atmosphere filled with solidarity and generosity.

Since November, I have also been attending Croatian language classes. I must admit—it is quite a challenging language for me 😊. However, I truly enjoy the lessons, as they are very helpful for everyday life. I can already say a few basic phrases like “hello,” “how are you,” and “thank you.” While I am not yet able to hold a full conversation, I am hopeful that in a few months I will make more progress. Fingers crossed!

As for the culinary workshops, everything went very well. It is heartwarming to see how interested our beneficiaries are in discovering other cultures. They ask many questions and show genuine curiosity, which makes the experience even more rewarding. Participating in these activities every week is also enriching for me, as I learn a great deal from them in return. Being able to cook for them and share my culture feels like a true cultural exchange—something I find deeply valuable.

I am very happy and grateful to be here, experiencing a different lifestyle and discovering a new culture. With a few months still ahead of me, I am excited to continue learning, sharing, and enjoying every moment.

I realize this might be a bit long—almost like a short novel—so thank you (Hvala) for reading. I wish everyone a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year, filled with health, love, and success.

To conclude, this experience has reminded me that connection has no age, and that the simplest moments are often the most meaningful.

See you next year!
Xoxo,
Jenny
