Over the past few weeks, activities have taken place celebrating Irish and Portuguese culture, with an emphasis on cuisine, music and other cultural aspects. These activities were organised as a chance to share the culture of the volunteers' countries with members of the Golden Age Centre.
In one of the Portuguese culture activities, a cooking evening was organised, the dish was a Portuguese salad. To make the event more interactive and welcoming, the members got involved in preparing the food. Some helped chop and peel ingredients, which created an atmosphere of collaboration and integration.
For the Irish cuisine evening, a potato salad was prepared. The main preparation was done at the association, on arrival, the salad was assembled with the aid of the members. Traditional music was played which enhanced the lively atmosphere. There was lots of chat and dancing shared between everyone.
Presentations were prepared on Portugal and Ireland. The members of the association had the opportunity to learn more about the countries, exploring aspects such as traditions, food and so on. In the Portugal presentation, videos were shown of great fado artists as well as popular dances from regions of Portugal. The Irish presentation gave the members a brief summary of Irish history. At the end of the presentations a space was opened up for questions.
The evenings were thoroughly enjoyed by both the volunteers and the members. The response after both evenings was very positive. It was an interesting experience to involve them in our cultures and introduce them to something new.
