Wednesday:
Clara Arrived-
My day started at 2:30am and I went to Faro airport to catch my first flight at 6am. I said goodbye to my parents and they wished me good luck. I landed in Lisbon and I got my breakfast there. I then flew to Zurich and I was feeling very nervous as I was alone and my flight was delayed so I was scared I would miss my next flight. I took the flight to Split and I watched the sunset as we landed and this comforted me. Katarina and Eva met me at the airport and brought me to the apartment. When I arrived I was so surprised at how lovely the apartment and I received a very warm welcome. By the end of the day I felt comforted and grateful that I get to experience this.
Thursday:
On Thursday we woke up early to go to the market. Katarina brought us to Lidl and helped Clara with her shopping – translating what she needed into English. Later that day, we met with Nena, one of our colleagues and she gave us a tour of the town of Split. We saw the old town, Riva and Ježinac beach. She brought us to have a great sandwich at a food van. Nena showed us an amazing spot, the monastery, to watch the sunset. We visited the Golden Age Centre and got to see a group enjoying their time there. That evening, we went swimming in the clear water of the sea and enjoyed our first sunset together by the sea at Ježinac beach.
Friday:
On Friday morning we walked to the association and met with Katarina. We walked to east coast and met with members of another association. They work in harm reduction with drug use and sexual health. We walked to Bačvice beach and shared a coffee with the other volunteers. We walked home and got to see more of the city and seen the beautiful sunset.
That evening, we explored some of Split’s nightlife.
Saturday:
Saturday morning, we explored more of the old town and the winding small streets. We saw some of the shops and a flower market. We went to the monastery that Nena had showed us and we watched a gorgeous sunset and then walked around the surrounding gardens, taking in the beautiful scenery. Then we shared a pizza beside the harbour and watched the sea.
Sunday:
Katarina collected us early with her kids and brought us to Drvenik Veli island. We explored some of the island, we saw some of the beaches and walked through nature. We picked olives and tasted arbutus and carob. It is olive picking season and we saw many people picking. We left with a bag full of oranges, lemon and grapefruit. We had freshly made lemonade. We visited a friend of Katarina’s and she served us a typical homemade Croatian drink, rakija.
